How to post a video on X (Twitter): app, desktop and scheduled
Updated Oct 9, 2026
Posting a video on X takes four taps once you know where the limits are. This guide covers the app and the desktop site, the format X accepts, the reasons an upload fails, and how to schedule video posts instead of posting them live.
How to post a video on X from the app
- 1
Tap the + button
In the X app, tap the blue + (post) button at the bottom right to open a new post.
- 2
Add the video
Tap the photo icon below the text box, pick the video from your gallery, or tap the camera to film one. You can trim it before attaching.
- 3
Write the text
Add up to 280 characters on a standard account. Mentions and hashtags count towards the limit.
- 4
Post
Tap Post. The video uploads and processes; on a slow connection, keep the app open until it finishes.
Posting a video from a computer
On x.com, click in the “What is happening?!” box at the top of your home timeline, then click the media icon below it and choose the video file. Write your text and click Post. Uploads from a computer are the easiest way to post a video edited on desktop, but the same limits apply as in the app.
If the Post button stays grey after you attach a video, the file is still uploading or X rejected it; a warning usually appears under the preview.
Video limits on X
Standard accounts can post one video per post, up to 2 minutes 20 seconds long and 512 MB. Paid subscriptions raise the length considerably, but if you post for an audience that includes standard accounts, short clips still perform best. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safest file; MOV works from phones.
- Length: up to 2:20 on standard accounts
- File: MP4 or MOV, up to 512 MB
- Shape: vertical 9:16, square 1:1 and horizontal 16:9 all play; vertical fills the most screen on phones
- Text: 280 characters on standard accounts
Why a video upload fails on X
The usual reasons are a video longer than 2:20, a file over the size limit, an unusual codec (HEVC from some phones, ProRes from cameras) or a frame rate above 60 fps. Re-exporting as MP4, H.264, 30 fps, 1080 pixels wide fixes almost all of them. If the video is fine and the upload still stalls, try the other route: desktop instead of app, or the reverse.
Making video posts work on X
X is a fast feed: most of a post's views come in the first hours. Put the point of the video in the text, not only in the clip, because many people scroll with sound off and decide from the words. Captions or on-screen text help for the same reason. One or two hashtags are plenty.
Weekday mornings, when people catch up on news, tend to bring the most replies. Our free best-time planner shows windows for X by country and niche.
How to schedule a video post on X
X lets you schedule posts from the desktop site (the calendar icon in the composer) on some account types. If you also post the same clip to TikTok, Instagram or LinkedIn, a scheduler that covers all of them saves a lot of repetition. In PostingClips you connect your X account, upload or make the clip, and pick the time: the caption for X is written to fit in 280 characters and the post goes out through the X API. X charges for API access, so the developer account behind the connection needs a payment method; that is X's rule.
