How to use the hashtag generator
- 1
Describe the video
Say what the video shows and who it is for. “Vegan lasagne in 20 minutes for busy parents” gives far better tags than “food”.
- 2
Pick the platform
Hashtags work differently on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X and LinkedIn, so the suggestions follow the platform.
- 3
Copy and trim
Copy the whole set, then keep the 3 to 6 that describe your video best. Fewer, precise tags beat a long generic list.
How hashtags work in 2026
Hashtags are no longer a way to “go viral”. On TikTok, Instagram and YouTube they are a hint: they help the platform understand what the video is about and who to show it to first. The video itself, how long people watch it, and the words in the caption and on screen weigh much more.
That changes how to pick them. A tag like #fyp or #viral tells the platform nothing about your video. A tag like #sourdoughbaking or #homeworkoutnoequipment tells it exactly which audience to test the video with. The generator starts with tags like these and adds only a couple of broad ones at the end.
How many hashtags to use
There is no magic number, but the platforms are clear about what they prefer. Instagram has said 3 to 5 relevant hashtags work better than 30. TikTok counts hashtags inside the caption limit, so a long list steals room from the text. YouTube shows the first three hashtags above the title, and ignores all of them if there are more than 60. On X and LinkedIn, one or two is plenty.
- TikTok: 3 to 5, mixing the exact topic and the community
- Instagram Reels: 3 to 5 precise ones
- YouTube Shorts: 2 or 3; the first three appear above the title
- Facebook: 1 to 3, or none
- X and LinkedIn: 1 or 2
Specific, community and broad tags
A good set has three layers. Specific tags describe this exact video (#croissantlamination). Community tags name the group of people who care (#bakersofinstagram, #booktok). Broad tags name the general category (#baking, #food). Specific and community tags get the video in front of the right first viewers; broad tags add little on their own but help when the video takes off.
The generator returns them in that order, so if you only keep five, keep the first five.
Tips for choosing hashtags
- Search the tag on the platform first: if the top videos have nothing to do with yours, skip it.
- Use tags in your audience's language, plus English ones only where that community really uses them.
- Don't repeat the exact same set on every post; vary it with the topic.
- Put the keywords in the caption and on screen too: platforms read all three.
- Avoid banned or spammy tags; they can limit how far a post goes.
Doing this for every post?
When PostingClips posts a clip, each account gets its own caption with hashtags chosen for that network and topic, so you never paste the same list everywhere.

Do hashtags still matter on TikTok and Instagram?
Less than they used to, but they still help the platform place your video. A few precise tags are useful; long generic lists are not.
Should I use #fyp or #foryou?
They don't hurt much, but they don't help either: millions of videos use them, so they say nothing about yours. Spend the space on tags that describe your topic.
Is the hashtag generator free?
Yes, a few times a day without an account, and more with a free PostingClips account.
Can I use the same hashtags on every platform?
You can, but it works better to adapt them: fewer on X and LinkedIn, community tags on TikTok and Instagram, searchable words on YouTube.
Where do the hashtags come from?
An AI model suggests them from your description and the platform you choose. Check the top results for a tag before relying on it, especially in a small niche.
